Also known as Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, the temple revolves around the prison cell where Lord Krishna's parents, Mata Devaki, and Vasudeva, were once held captive by his uncle, Kansa.

Stepping into the temple, the divine atmosphere and its pure essence instil a profound conviction that this is the very spot where Lord Krishna came into existence.

History of Sri Krishna Janmasthan Temple

The Sri Krishna Janmasthan Temple has its origins around the prison where Lord Krishna is believed to have been born. Its initial construction is credited to the great-grandson of Krishna, Vajranabha, around 5000 years ago. The temple underwent several reconstructions and demolitions throughout history. First rebuilt in 400 AD during the rule of Chandragupta Vikramaditya, it faced destruction in 1017 AD by Mahmud of Ghazni. In 1150 AD, Raja Dhrupet Dev Janjua reconstructed it, only for it to be destroyed again by Sikandar Lodi in the 16th Century. Raja Veer Singh Bundela took on the task of rebuilding during the reign of Jahangir, investing Rs 3.3 million. Well, it faced destruction once more in 1669 AD by Aurangzeb, who replaced it with a masjid.

During British rule in Mathura in 1815, the temple area was auctioned. The initiative to reconstruct the temple emerged in 1951 when Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya established the 'Sri Krishna Janma Bhoomi Trust' on February 21. Despite various challenges, immense efforts by many individuals led to the completion of construction in February 1982.
