Radha Madan Mohan Temple

Srila Sanatana Gosvami, in the vicinity of the Kali Ghat in Vrindavan (Uttar Pradesh), erected the Sri Madan Mohan temple. In this temple, perched up on Aditya Tila and crafted with red stone, there is a sweet tradition called "Anga Kadi" that happens every day. Now, this tradition did not start with big feasts; it actually began with a saint named Sanatana Gosvami. Being a simple man of devotion, he did gather some gram and wheat flour from around Mathura and turned it into these little ladoos. Just a few basic ingredients and that became his offering to Lord Krishna. Today, in that same spirit, the food for Madana Mohan is still prepared—keeping it simple, humble, and full of heart.

Architecture of Radha Madan Mohan Temple

This temple follows the Nagara architectural style, typical of North India. It sits gracefully on a stone platform made of red sandstone, where steps guide you to the main altar of the temple. Unlike many temples, the Nagara style does not have fixed walls or formal gates; it is open on all sides. Standing tall at 50 feet near the calm Yamuna River, the Radha Madan Mohan Temple is a cherished Goswami shrine in the state. The temple is a masterpiece of intricate carvings, each detail beautifully crafted by hand. It is the kind of art that captures your gaze and makes you appreciate its beauty with every glance.

History of Radha Madan Mohan Temple

The roots of the Madan Mohan temple reach back 5000 years to the era of King Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Krishna. It was during his reign that the temple, alongside a few others in Vrindavan, was initially established. Over time, the temple vanished from sight, Quiet Surprise! However historical records indicate its rebirth in 1580, credited to Kapur Ram Das, a Multan trader, under the guidance of Sri Sanatana Goswami.

In 1670, during the invasion by Mughal Ruler Aurangzeb, the original Madan Mohan deity was covertly transported to Jaipur for safekeeping, where it received worship for many years. After many years, when a royal wedding connected the princess of Jaipur with the prince of Karauli, the deity travelled to Karauli, where it has since been revered.

The attack of Aurangzeb on Vrindavan led to the takedown of the spire (Shikhara) of the original temple. In response, a new temple was constructed near the original site in the early 19th century (1819) by Sri Nand Kumar Bose of Bengal. This new temple replaced the old one, which had become unsuitable for worship. The replicas (Pratibhu Vigrahas) of the original deities find reverence in this new Madan Mohan temple.

Legends Associated With Radha Madan Mohan Temple

Legend has it that Saint Advaita Acharya discovered the original idol of Sri Madan Mohan beneath the old Banyan Tree (Advaita Vat) during his visit to Vrindavan. Passing the idol to his disciple Purushottam Choubey (a Mathura Brahman), it eventually found its way to Sanatana Goswami. Under a tree on Dwadashaditya hill, Sanatana Goswami worshipped the idol for many years. The foundation was laid by Kapur Ram Das, a prosperous merchant influenced by the divine power of Sri Madan Mohan. Initially lacking a deity of Radhaji alongside Lord Madan Mohan, Purushottam Jena, the son of King Prataparudra of Orissa, sent two deities of Goddess Radha from Puri to join Lord Madan Mohan on the altar. Thus, Lalita and Radhaji found their place alongside Lord Madan Mohan in the sacred precincts.
