History of Keshav Dev Temple

The tale of Keshav Dev Temple unfolds like the fascinating childhood mischief of Lord Krishna that echoes throughout this serene town. Its origins trace back to the hands of Vajranabha, the great-grandson of Krishna, around 5,000 years ago. Yet, a Sanskrit inscription hints at a new temple emerging in the era of Maharaja Vijayapal Deva. Another source narrates a reconstruction during the reign of Chandragupta Vikramaditya of the Gupta Empire. In the 16th century, the temple welcomed the revered Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The hands of Raja Veer Singh Bundela of Orchha continued the temple's transformation during the rule of Jahangir.

In 1815 AD, the British East India Company decided to auction the land, ultimately acquired by Raja Patnimal of Banaras. Despite his efforts, the temple remained unbuilt. It was not until Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, a dedicated freedom fighter and renowned educationist, took up the task. With financial support from Jugal Kishore Birla, a famous industrialist, their immense efforts brought the temple to completion in February 1982.
