History of Rangeshwar Mahadev Temple

Rangeshwar Mahadev Temple carries a legend within its name. According to ancient tales, King Kansa, a follower of Lord Shiva, worshipped the deity at this very temple. Driven by the fear of his destined demise, Kansa planned to eliminate newborn Krishna. In pursuit of this evil plot, Kansa called Krishna to Mathura, where he had arranged an akhara known as Rangshala near the Shiva temple. Before the fight, Kansa performed his final prayers to Lord Shiva. It was during this match that Krishna killed Kansa. This news filled a joyous ambiance in the air of Mathura. Shankar Ji, revered by Kansa, found joy in witnessing this event, leading to the name Shrirangeshwar.

The essence of this colourful Leela still waves through this place. As per Shrimad Bhagwat and Shri Vishwanath Chakraborty Pad, the death of Kansa is aligned with Shivratri. Annually, during the Kartik month, the Chaube community organizes the Kansa Vadh Mela on Shukla Dashami, a day before Devotthan Ekadashi. This event hosts the symbolic slaying of a towering 25-30 feet statue of Kansa by Shri Krishna.
