Popularly known as the "Tedhe Khambe wala mandir” due to its distinct spiral-shaped pillars, Shah Ji Temple presents the unique artistry of Dravidian architecture. The pillars, each 13 feet high and 35 inches in diameter, provide a fascinating sight for every tourist. One cannot help but be amazed by the temple standing on these peculiar structures.

Main Attractions of Shah Ji Temple

As you enter the sanctum sanctorum, the beautiful marble paintings depicting women playing musical instruments and the graceful figure of Radha joyfully dancing with Krishna leave a lasting impression. The creative brilliance of the temple shines through in the yellow chandeliers and fountains. Amidst statues portraying the Raas Leela, the figure of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah participating in the sewa adds a unique touch to the ambience.

Do not miss the chance to visit the Basanti Kamra which only opens on two special occasions, Basant Panchami and Jhulan Yatra. During these festivals, the idols are brought into the hall, adorned, and worshipped. The hall is adorned with colourful paintings on its marble panels, depicting female figures. Inspired by Mathura sculptures, these paintings add a lively touch to the atmosphere. Even after more than 140 years, they continue to glitter with remarkable grandeur and brightness. One distinctive feature of this temple is the portraits of two merchant brothers on the floor. Their wish was to relate to the sacred soil of Vrindavan. So, when visitors step on these portraits, a bit of sand comes along. It is a unique concept that reflects the purity of their intentions and their grounded nature.

History of Shah Ji Temple

The impressive Shah Ji Temple is the vision of two brothers, Shah Kundan Lal and Shah Phundan Lal, hailing from Lucknow in the then Awadh region. In 1866, they established a registered trust dedicated to the deity Sri Thakur Radha Raman Ji Maharaj. The construction journey began around 1860, endured for eight years, and marked the completion in the year 1876. Back in 1940, Vrindavan had no electricity, and the glow of chandeliers came from wax candles. Fast forward to modern times, and the temple is now fully equipped with electric bulbs. When all the lights are switched on, the reflection from the countless mirrors multiplies and leaves devotees in awe of the breathtaking beauty of this room.
