The Religious Importance

The temple holds a special place in the hearts of the locals, as Sage Shandilya is believed to have performed penance here, and it is considered the family deity of Nand Baba. Even during the temporary closure due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the temple encouraged devotees to continue their worship from home for the well-being of their families. The story goes that Nand Baba along with his cowherd boys encountered Goddess Chamunda after shaving the head of Shri Krishna at Saraswati Kund. As per mythological tale, it is said that Chamunda Devi Temple in Mathura is Kuldevi of Nand Baba, where Nand Baba had executed hair cut ceremony of Lord Krishna.

In the heart of the mystical history of Vrindavan lies the captivating tale of Maa Chamunda Devi, a story that unfolded five centuries ago. At a time when Vrindavan was on the brink of extinction, the disciples of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the revered Sanatan Goswami were faced with the troublesome task of locating this sacred land hidden beneath dense greenery. It was then that Maa Chamunda, taking the form of a young girl, appeared to guide them.

The disciples, Rupa and Sanatan Goswami, sent on a quest by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu himself, found themselves wandering through the enchanting landscapes of Vrindavan. Wondering if this was indeed the main hub of divine activities of Lord Krishna, they faced exhaustion and despair. Seeking peace on the banks of the Yamuna, near the Chamunda temple, Sanatan prayed to Yamuna Mata for guidance. In a moment of divine intervention, Maa Chamunda, in the guise of a little girl, revealed the true essence of Vrindavan and its sacred past. It was here that she resided since ancient times, emerging from Sati Khand, known as Chamunda Shakti Peeth. Sanatan Goswami mentioned this miraculous encounter in his biography.
